More on Jeep's rich history
Adventure, rugged, freedom are what define the Jeep brand with a well-suited slogan:
 Go Anywhere. Do Anything.
Â
This year, Jeep celebrates 75 years since it first emerged in the
1940s as the official 4X4 vehicle for Allied WWII forces. Known at the
time as Willys MB, this tough, versatile vehicle revolutionized war
efforts. Horses and motorcycles became obsolete as the all-purpose MBs
were fit with machine guns and could cover any terrain - snow or desert.
They were heavy-duty, but small enough to fit into aircraft transport
like the gliders used in D-day.
By the 1950s, softer styling lines,
such as those on the CJ-5 had led Jeeps to become a favorite among the
public. The off-road vehicles were now longer, with better seating and
improvements to the engine, which made the cars stronger and more
comfortable.

Throughout the 60s and 70s, Jeeps took on many shapes and sizes, including pickup models and wagoneers. The popular Cherokee and Renegade were introduced along with the first full time 4X4 system.
Then, in the 1980s the brand once again revolutionized the market with its new Cherokee XJ. It was the first compact 4-door SUV with a shorter, narrower, lower and lighter frame than the Wagoneer. Now, off-road enthusiasts could maneuver the rough terrain in a more compact vehicle.
Most people would say the very popular Jeep Wrangler is the most iconic American vehicle there is. The Wrangler, which was born in the 1980s, took on a major overhaul in the 90s. It kept its retro exterior, reminiscent of the original Willys Jeep in shape and size, but its mechanics were completely overhauled to include new quadra-coil suspension and many other improved off-road capabilities.
Today, the Wrangler is the ultimate all-American 4X4 freedom machine. Its signature round headlamps, iconic seven-slot grille, removable doors and tops and fold-down windshield are like no other vehicle on the market, while the Cherokee continues to redefine the mid-size market with a perfect blend of on-road refinement and off-road capability.
There's no end to the brand's possibilities. Building on Jeep-lovers' nostalgia for the Wrangler, there will be a new line to look forward to in 2017 with the release of a Wrangler pickup. No matter the shape or size, Jeeps continue to be the favorite vehicle for those who value adventure and freedom. After 75 years, the Jeep name is legendary on the open road.
