These days, midsize SUVs are a dime a dozen, which can make it difficult for some entries in the segment to truly stand out. However, one of the few exceptions is the Jeep Grand Cherokee. Around since the 1993 model year, the Grand Cherokee continues to serve as the perennial choice for Ridgefield, CT drivers who place a premium on engine power and off-road capability.

The 2020 model year is no exception, and you'll enjoy exploring each of the seven Grand Cherokee trim levels available: Laredo, Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, Summit, SRT, and Trackhawk. Indeed, customers now have beefier choices than ever before.

Performance

The new Jeep Grand Cherokee offers refined power for your daily adventures. Still present is the longstanding 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, which generates 295 horsepower and 260 lb.-ft. of torque and comes with a stop-start system to prevent unnecessary consumption of fuel. However, if you go with the Limited, Trailhawk, or Summit trim, you can swap the famous Pentastar engine with the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 for even more output: 360 horsepower and 390 lb.-ft. of torque, to be precise. It's the SRT and Trackhawk models that get the most powerful engines in not just the trim lineup, but also in Grand Cherokee history.

Under the hood of the SRT is the 6.4-liter HEMI V8 engine, which generates 475 horsepower and 470 lb.-ft. of torque. The Trackhawk goes with the supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI V8 for an output of 707 horsepower and 645 lb.-ft. of torque.

You don't have to worry about having problems towing or hauling other vehicles, whether it's for a boat trip or you're rescuing someone else. Indeed, you can configure the Grand Cherokee to tow up to 7,200 lbs., which makes it the best in the midsize SUV class.

Off-Road Versatility

Of course, no piece on the Jeep Grand Cherokee would be complete without mentioning its orientation as an off-road vehicle. There's the choice of going with a four-wheel-drive (4x4) system, which sends engine power to all four wheels - as opposed to just the front wheels or the rear wheels - to maximize tire grip on driving surfaces. This is especially crucial when driving on rocky or less-than-smooth terrain, which is mainly characteristic of outdoor or trail driving. Choices of 4x4 systems vary by trim. The base-level Laredo goes with Quadra-Trac I, which comes with a brake lock differential.

The Limited, Trailhawk, Overland, and Summit have the Quadra-Trac II choice, which features a two-speed transfer case to quickly detect tire slip and apply corrective action, as well as a low range for added off-road capability. The upper-level SRT and Trackhawk get the top-tier Quadra-Trac Active on Demand system, which does not require input from you at all and simply transfers torque to wheels with traction when wheel slippage occurs. Regardless of trim, though, the Jeep Grand Cherokee gets a Select-Terrain system for providing all-weather capability in four modes: Auto, Snow, Sport, and Sand/Mud. Notably, the Trailhawk, SRT, and Trackhawk - as the most off-road-optimized trims available - come with standard 4x4.

Technology

Whether you're going on your daily commute or a trail adventure, you will enjoy using the Uconnect 4 infotainment interface. It is anchored with a large 7-inch touchscreen and features crisp graphics and a customizable menu that makes it one of the best infotainment systems in the industry.

Accompanying Uconnect are features such as six speakers, Bluetooth wireless technology for hands-free phone operation and audio streaming, two USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack for connecting mobile devices, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for smartphone integration, a memory card slot for playing additional digital media, and a one-year trial subscription to SiriusXM satellite radio subscription.
